Insulin Resistance and Weight Loss – The Struggle is Real

Have you struggled to lose weight?

Does it seem like no matter how much effort you put in; you are simply stuck?

You might be one of many Americans who are insulin resistant…

What is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. It regulates the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood. An ongoing lack of insulin results in diabetes.

After a meal, all carbohydrates break down into glucose. This is the body’s main source of energy. The glucose enters the bloodstream and in response, the pancreas produces insulin, allowing the glucose to enter the body’s cells.

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance occurs when cells in your fat, muscles, and liver don’t respond properly to insulin. This means that they cannot take the glucose from your blood and use it for energy. This causes your pancreas to create more insulin. Over time this can cause your blood sugar level to elevate.

Why This Matters in Terms of Weight Loss

When your cells become chronically resistant to insulin, it results in elevated blood sugar levels. The result of which can be prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and often unwanted weight gain regardless of how well you eat or amount the of exercise and physical activity. Losing weight with insulin resistance is more challenging because the body stores excess blood sugar as fat.

How Can You Lose Weight if You Find Yourself Insulin Resistant?

There are dietary and lifestyle changes that you can make that can help. Adding more fiber to your diet from sources like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and beans.  Reduce the number of calories taken in from carbohydrates, especially simple carbs like bread, cereals, and sugars.

Getting regular exercise both weight-bearing and cardiovascular is important as well to help burn off excess weight.

When Diet & Exercise Are Just Not Working

Up until recently this has been a very frustrating situation for many. You change your diet, reduce caloric intake, work out, and  – nothing, the scale drops a few pounds and then stops or worse, won’t budge at all.

Now there is Ozempic/Semaglutide/Wegovy!

This medication was originally used simply to help control Type 2 Diabetes. With widespread use and numerous studies came the realization that not only did it help keep insulin in check it also helped its users shed the unwanted pounds many had been fighting so hard for so long and seemingly without much extra effort. It has been FDA-approved for weight loss since 2021.
