Mobile Devices Use leading to “Text Neck Syndrome”

text neckWe live in a world where our lives exist within our devices. Contacts, Social Media, Calendars, even driving directions. We depend on the information available at our fingertips.

Our lives move faster and more efficiently because of them, but what are they doing to our posture and the health of our spines?

It has become the socially acceptable norm to bring your phone everywhere. Staring at it in public everywhere from coffee shops, sitting on a bench in a park, even driving. The phrase “Text Neck” has been used in recent years and is used to describe neck injury, pain, and damage caused from cocking your head downward all the time to look at your wireless device.

Perfect standing posture will hold your head at 0 degrees.

Every inch you tilt your head forward the pressure on the spine is doubled. The human head on average weighs 10 to 12 lbs. Just a 15 degree lean brings it up to 27 lbs., and if you really slouch, a tilt of 60 degrees can be up to 60 lbs. of pressure. That’s like having a 5-year-old sitting on your shoulders leaning forward.

Over time that is a lot of wear and tear on your neck and spine. If not adjusted by a Chiropractor on a regular basis it can quickly lead to degeneration and in turn, pain. You may end up needing to see an Orthopedist.

Stretching tissues for an extended time creates inflammation and pain. That can lead to muscle strain, herniated discs, and pinched nerves. If not corrected the natural curve of the neck can actually alter causing, even more, issues including headaches, depression, neurological issues, and even heart disease.

Living without technology is an unreasonable expectation. Here are some suggestions to help keep your neck healthy.

  1. Neck Exercises
  2. Shoulder Shrugs
  3. Stretch
  4. When you do look down try not to slouch or angle your head too drastically
  5. Limit time on mobile devices if possible
  6. Visit your Chiropractor and massage therapist on a regular basis
  7. Consult an Orthopedist
