Influenza happens seasonally and can make many people very sick. The elderly, young children, and anyone with a compromised immune system are at risk. The common cold, however, can make you feel pretty bad, but is mild compared to the flu.

There is a way to tell which one you have.

If you have a cold, your symptoms can include: body aches, sneezing, have a stuffy nose, have a sore throat, feel a bit tired, and experience coughing.

If you have the flu, your symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, overall weakness, and chest discomfort which can turn acute.  Some cases of flu can turn into pneumonia if not watched carefully.

Once you contract either a cold or the flu, there is no “cure” for either one. They are viruses that will need to run their course through your body. You can find, however, many over-the-counter and holistic remedies that can ease your symptoms.  Some people think that antibiotics will get rid of the these viruses. Antibiotics cannot kill a virus, but can rid your body of infections. Infections such as pneumonia can occur from a virus. If an infection is suspected such as a sinus infection or pneumonia, a visit to the doctor for prescribed medicine is recommended. Those with a weak immune system are more susceptible to infections.

The flu is spread very easily through the air and on surfaces such as a doorknob or faucet handle. To avoid a virus, it is recommended to wash your hands often.  Don’t touch your nose/mouth/eyes without washing your hands first. Also, get the flu vaccine. Those who are elderly and school-age children should get the flu shot every year.
