Common Foot Problems That Podiatrists Encounter

foot problemsFoot problems abound since we are, let’s face it, walking on our feet all of the time. Our feet are unsung heroes! Sometimes we treat them like kings and get pedicures, massages and comfortable insoles in our shoes. For the most part, however, we beat our feet up on a daily basis. That is why we have podiatrists, aka a foot doctor. They are trained in treating the problems that arise with our feet.

When your feet hurt, it can make your life miserable. Of the plethora of foot problems that podiatrists treat, we have listed the most common ailments below.

  • Bunions: a bunion is the joint of the big toe that sticks out on the side of your foot because the toe itself has turned inward. This can be the result of wearing pointed shoes, forcing the big toe to turn in towards the other toes. The only solution to this problem is to consult with a podiatrist and have the toe corrected via surgical means.
  • Blisters: a blister is a soft area of skin with clear fluid inside of it. They can be very painful. The cause of blisters are ill-fitting shoes. You can pop the blister with a sterilized needle, then add disinfecting ointment to it.
  • Athlete’s Foot: this foot problem is the result of fungus growing on the bottom of the foot and in between the toes. Mold likes warm, moist, dark places to thrive. Keep your feet dry to avoid athlete’s foot. It is a condition that will itch and even have a burning feeling. It is red with a white scaly coating over it and can have an unpleasant scent. Use over-the-counter anti-fungal medication for athlete’s foot or seek a doctor for a prescription strength anti-fungal.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: of the foot problems, this one can be very painful. The fascia, tissue that connects the heel to the ball of the foot, becomes irritated. Consult your podiatrist for plantar fasciitis treatment.
  • Gout: this condition is a type of arthritis in which the uric acid levels become too high, causing inflammation of the joints in the foot. You will notice it mainly in the big toe. It will become red and swollen. Avoid gout by adjusting your diet to reduce uric acid levels. Treat gout with ice packs and resting the foot elevated for periods of time. Consult your doctor if it becomes bothersome.

As you can see, our feet do react when they are not treated right. Take care of your feet by wearing the appropriate size shoes, correct insole supports and correct stockings. We encourage you to reach out to a podiatrist for any concerns or ailments that you are experiencing with your feet.
