Are You at Risk for Deep Vein Thrombosis?

A deep vein thrombosis can be a scary thing to experience, having knowledge ahead of time can not only save you time, it could save your life.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot which forms in the deeper veins located in the leg or arm. While blood clots in the superficial veins do not pose a danger of pulmonary embolism, clots in the deep veins pose a potentially serious threat which could lead to stroke or heart attack. It is vital if you believe you have a possible clot to get medical attention as soon as possible.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services the risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) include

  • A previous history of DVT
  • Genetic blood disorders
  • Birth control pills can raise the risk of clotting especially above the age of 30
  • Trauma or injury to a deep vein
  • Lack of movement causing slow blood flow
  • Pregnancy & Child birth
  • Cancer treatments
  • A central venous catheter
  • DVT can happen at any age but increases at age 60
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking

Your risk for DVT increases if you have more than one of the risk factors in the list. It is important if you feel or notice any symptoms to get them checked.

Symptoms may include:

  • swelling in your foot, ankle, or leg
  • tightness in your calf
  • severe pain in your foot and or ankle
  • skin turning pale or a reddish or bluish color
