The summer has come to an end and the kids are returning to school. There are a few things that you can do as a parent for your children’s health this coming school year. Here we have listed some tips:
- Before the first day of school starts, you will want to take your child to the doctor for a well-visit. If he/she participates in school sports, your school may require a health check-up.
- After months of your child avoiding exposure to many people in an enclosed space, he/she may be more susceptible to viruses once surrounded by classmates for hours. Consider having a doctor administer the flu shot. Definitely make sure all vaccinations are up to date before school starts.
- If your child has health concerns such as food allergies or diabetes, schedule an appointment with the school nurse weeks before the first day of school. Provide them with medications that can be kept in nurse’s office if needed. You will probably need to sign paperwork. So, scheduling this ahead of time is ideal.
- Review with your child the importance of washing his/her hands throughout the day, especially before eating lunch. Also, to keep his/her hands away from the mouth, nose, and eyes to avoid contracting a virus.
- Start your child’s day of school on a healthy foot by providing a nutritious breakfast. Also, if possible, pack a healthy lunch with his/her favorite foods. Eating healthy foods will keep his/her immune system running strong.
- Get back to a normal routine of bedtime, homework, bath time, and meals. Children will manage their lives better by having a structure to work with during the school year. It will make your life easier too! A set bedtime is important so your child gets enough sleep, 8 hours, to tackle his/her day.
Getting ready for the school year will make the transition from summertime to school time easier for everyone in the family.
