Tips on Preventing Sun Damage this Summer

sun damageThe sun in southwest Florida is intense most of the year, but especially during the summer months. It is imperative that you take the proper precautions in order to prevent sun damage to your skin. Damage to your skin causes aging and can lead to skin cancer. The great part is that it is preventable. Here are some tips for the coming summer months:

  • Using sunscreen with at least a sun protection factor (spf) of 30+ is essential not only during the summer months, but all year long. Make sure that it is labeled “broad spectrum”, which indicates that it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply the sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go out into the sunshine. Also, re-apply sunscreen after two hours or earlier if you go for a swim or sweat a lot.

  • Wear light weight clothing that covers your skin to avoid sun damage. Clothing, however, will not totally block the sun’s rays. The tighter the weave of the fabric, the less ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate. There are fabrics on the market that are designed specifically to block out as much UV as possible. They have a UPF, ultraviolet protection factor, rating label which is tested in laboratories so consumers have confidence that the UPF is valid

  • Stay out of the sun. This sounds simple enough, but can prove to be a challenge during the summer months. If you need to be outside, try to avoid the hours of 10:00 am – 2:00 pm when the sun’s rays are the most intense.

  • Wear a wide brimmed hat to protect the delicate skin on the face. This will not only keep your face in the shade, but it will also keep you cooler. Wide brimmed hats come in many styles and colors.

  • For beach-goers, set up a large beach umbrella that has an UPF rating. This will give you much-needed shade on the beach and protect your skin at the same time.

  • Sport UV sunglasses everywhere you go! It’s important to protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. With the many shapes and colors available, you are sure to find one that fits your style.

As you can see, there are preventable ways of avoiding skin damage from the sun. Examine your skin on a regular basis and, if you notice anything suspicious, contact your local dermatologist to get a consultation.
